Khine Pwint Phyu, the sole scholarship recipient for 2024, joins us to share her incredible journey and answer questions about her path to this remarkable achievement.
1. What was your initial reaction upon learning that you received the only scholarship in the faculty for 2024?
I was so nervous that I couldn’t sleep. When the results were finally out, and I saw my name, realising that I was the only one chosen, I felt so grateful and also proud of myself for achieving my goal that I worked so hard for.
2. What motivated you to apply for this scholarship, and how did you prepare for the selection process?
My experience of working in advertising agencies made me realise my passion for this industry. Also, I was eager to make a meaningful difference in my life. When I found out about TISR, I knew it would help me both financially, academically and professionally.
Once I set my mind on this goal, I started preparing myself to meet and exceed the requirements. I studied super hard to get strong scores for GED and IELTS. For written exams, I researched the possible topics and listed outlines. For the interview exam, I prepared questions in advance and practised. Speaking with previous scholarship winners helped me along the process, too.
3. What aspects of the faculty or program at our university influenced your decision to pursue your studies here?
I was very influenced by the course structures of BJM. I was impressed by the fact that I will get to learn both theoretical and practical aspects of journalism, media and communication. The history of Thammasat University was one of the factors too.
4. What areas of journalism or mass communication are you most passionate about?
Before the course, I was more interested in broadcasting media and advertising. Now, as I study, I am interested in academic aspects such as understanding the media power, the importance of journalism, exploring its history and theories.
5. What advice would you give to future students who aspire to follow in your footsteps and apply for scholarships in this field?
From preparing to application, it was a lengthy and challenging process for me. So, my advice is to set goals, to prepare a timeline first to track the progress, to try your best and to not give up. Make sure to reward your hard work and enjoy the process, too. And best of luck!
