EAINDAR PHYU SIN AUNG or Jasmin, a 18 year old full-time student from Myanmar, got a scholarship from Thammasat University and decided to come to Thailand to pursue her bachelor degree at B.J.M. Program, Faculty of Journalism and Mass Communication. This is what she shared her first month experience with us:
Could you please introduce yourself?
I am a first-year international student from BJM and come from Myanmar. I got a full scholarship under TISR (round 2) for the entire four years for the undergraduate program.
How was your class? Is it different from Myanmar?
It’s been only one month since I have arrived but already experienced different kinds of cultural differences. I previously studied at international school back in my country, so I was used to speaking in English and this program teaches entirely in English. Thai students are fluent in English which makes it easier for me to communicate with them. I was sad because I used to study online during high-school due to Covid. But now we are allowed to study in person and make new friends.
What about your student’s life here in Thammasat?
Students in Thammasat University are allowed to dress casually daily and it’s optional to wear a uniform. There is an activity called TPC Crazy Week where you dress up according to them like pajamas. It was fun to dress up and win the prizes.
Students are required to choose at least five courses among a few classes, and I chose six courses. The professors at the university are great teachers. They encouraged us to think instead of memorizing. Moreover, they showed us their knowledge each week and helped us to apply in groupwork.
Why did you choose to study here in Thailand?
Thailand was the best decision I chose to study abroad. Culturally speaking, it a lot like Myanmar. They share similar climates, with hot summers and mild winters. Additionally, both countries have a strong Buddhist influence in their culture. I got the opportunity to visit so many places and see multiple different sceneries that convinced me that I made the best choice ever by going abroad. I am looking forward to the rest of the semester.
